According to Yahoo! Sports, the Cleveland Browns held a private workout with California Golden Bears running back, Shane Vereen on Tuesday as the team continues to prepare for the 2011 NFL Draft.
Vereen is among the top five ranked runners in the entire draft class as he rushed for 13 touchdowns in 2010 along with 1,167 yards. Vereen was a three year starter with California and compiled almost 3,000 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns throughout his career.
He may have also been one of the most impressive runners at the NFL Combine as he bench pressed 225 pounds a total of 31 times and also ranked among the top in his 40-yard dash. His recorded measurements came in at 5’11 and 210 pounds.
One of the best things about Vereen’s game, and definitely a point of interest for scouts, is that he played in every game with California and was never significantly injured.
It is no surprise that the Browns would be looking into potential running back candidates as the team depth chart is thin behind Peyton Hillis. Monterio Hardesty struggled to remain healthy in 2009 as a knee injury in the pre-season kept him out of action.
Cleveland also has Mike Bell on the active roster as well as other practice squad players.
