Dallas Cowboys NFL draft series: Texas running back Jamaal Charles
Size: 6-1, 200
Combine 40-yard dash: 4.38
POSITIVES
Charles is a former track star who makes tacklers miss, both in the open field and in tight spaces. He has good vision, especially with cutback lanes. He's a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He's not a big back, but he is good at getting yards after contact, often shedding tacklers with a strong stiff-arm or sweet spin move. He exhibited good patience and an ability to read blocks at Texas, but the vast majority of his carries came on zone plays out of the shotgun. Has good hands and might be able to immediately contribute as a kick/punt returner despite not filling those roles in college.
COWBOY FIT
He would be a fine fit if the Cowboys want lightning to complement Marion "The Barbarian" Barber's thunder. Charles would give the Cowboys a "wow" element as a change-of-pace back because of his breakaway speed. However, he would have to prove that he was prepared to play on third downs as a rookie after limited action in passing situations at Texas. Most projections have Charles going in the second round, probably going off the board before the Cowboys are on the clock with the 59th overall pick. He could be a target if the Cowboys trade down with one of their first-rounders, something Jerry Jones twice in the last four years.
TEXAS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR GREG DAVIS
"So often when you talk about guys that have track speed, you think they are stiff. He has excellent flexibility. He has tremendous lateral movement and the ability to make people miss in small, confined areas. That's the thing that sticks out to me. ... And he's not a small guy. He grew a great deal in [gaining tough yards]. As a fast guy, I think sometimes the natural tendency is to think more east and west. But most of his big runs last year were between the tackles. ... He's like most backs. He needs to work on [pass protection]. But he is courageous. He's not afraid to put his face in there. ... It's just a matter of learning the pass protection scheme a team is using and being able to get comfortable. He worked hard at it. We didn't ask him to do a lot of that early in his career. ... His hands are real good. His route running is something that needs to be refined. He caught the ball well for us. He caught the ball well vertically and on checkdowns and flares. ... We did not think he was loose with the ball or careless with the ball. I would certainly not classify him as a guy who had fumble problems. ... He probably would have returned punts for us next season if he would have stayed here. He can catch a punt and do something with it. ... He's just tremendously competitive. Just enjoys competing. If we were kicking field goals, he would want to kick them. He's much more of a competitor than you think when you first meet him."
