Seven questions with Longhorns offensive left tackle Kyle Hix:
How will the quarterback being under center change the offense? It gives us a new mentality in the way we attack defenses since they don't know if we're going to pass every time. It keeps them on their side of the ball a lot more and makes our lives a lot easier.
Do you like the new emphasis on running the ball?I love that. It's a lot of fun just trying to get after people and running more downhill. It lets the backs see more and make more cuts. You can come off (the snap) and hit some people in the mouth. Every offensive lineman in the country loves that mindset.
Fozzy (Whittaker) and Tré (Newton) are great running backs. So, if we just open up lanes for them, they're going to score.
How has the offensive line progressed during the spring?I think we're taking a big step in the right direction in getting under center and moving the ball and moving people around. I think the mindset this spring is we're not just trying to get off the ball, we're trying to dominate people.
Have you taken on more leadership since three starters graduated? We're trying to step up and fill the roles of Chris Hall, Charlie (Tanner) and Adam (Ulatoski). We're trying to get a new attitude, start from scratch and become a dominant offensive line.
Does it help to have played next to Michael Huey most of your career? I think we're all starting to mesh together. Me and Huey have been on the same side since I've been here, and we've worked really well together. I think we're coming together at a good time heading into the summer.
Who has jumped out at you during spring?Sam Acho is doing great. It's Sam being Sam. Keenan's (Robinson) doing really well, and actually Garrett is also doing really well, too. He's taken the offense over and (is) being a leader. He's made some tremendous steps this spring. He was lighting them up today.
Has it been difficult to switch to the left side of the line? After the spring, I've gotten used to it. It feels natural now, so it's not an issue. The first week was rocky, but I'm comfortable now.
