The path to the Draft is officially upon us and it is time to take a look at the direction that the Cleveland Browns will be taking this off-season. Every two days, I will break down a new round starting with the seventh and working up to the top. Keep checking in for new updates and information as more rounds are added!
Earlier this week, we broke down the Browns’ draft strategy for the sixth round as three possible options came fourth as potential picks. Now, the fifth round is upon us and one single prospect will be highlighted as the Cleveland Browns pick.
So who is it?
Glad you asked, the Browns select Pernell McPhee, DE, Mississippi State as the team continues to work on building depth in Dick Jauron’s 4-3 defense.
McPhee played mostly defensive tackle in college but his lack of size will push him to end where his ability to rush the quarterback will be tested. McPhee only collected 88 tackles in his career at Mississippi State but did not have a very strong supporting cast and was also limited by State’s lack of blitzing ability.
McPhee also recorded seven sacks in his two seasons with the team.
The Browns can use McPhee in two different ways. He could fit in nicely alongside of Athyba Rubin at the defensive tackle position or come off the end where Cleveland is lacking options. Either way, he will almost be guaranteed a roster spot if he reports to camp on time and in shape.
