Texas whips Nation, evens series

College football in Texas extends far past the Big 12, but in terms of exposure and national prominence, that power conference carries the flag.

On a sunny Saturday at the Sun Bowl, the schools of the Big 12 carried it high in the second Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game.

Players from the University of Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma scored 21 of the first 27 points for the Texas squad, leading their team to a 41-14 rout of The Nation.

A crowd of 26,821 made the Texas vs. The Nation game the second-most attended of the post-season all-star games.

"The Big 12, Texas did a good job," said offensive MVP Danny Amendola of Texas Tech, who led all receivers with three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, plus another catch to the 1-yard line that set up a score. "The Big 12 players did great.

"This was exactly what I wanted. These old coaches like to run the ball a lot ... we didn't go three-wides much, but I made the most of the opportunities."

"Every defensive back from the Big 12 had a big play," said defensive MVP Erick Jackson of Texas, who scored on a 50-yard fumble return forced by his Longhorn teammate Robert Killebrew. "It was great that my boy Robert forced that fumble.

"I've been with him since Day 1, and when he made that hit, I knew it was me to pick it up and go."

That fumble recovery and return early in the third quarter put Texas ahead 21-7 and began to turn the game into a rout.

Texas forced six turnovers and held The Nation to 189 yards. Both The Nation scores came on kick returns.

Oklahoma's Garret Hartley kicked two field goals and all the extra points.

The overall MVP was Northwest Missouri State's Xavier Omon of the Texas team, who had 91 yards on nine carries.
