An insurance policy has been taken out on Texas quarterback and three-time Longhorn MVP Colt McCoy, ESPN.com said.
The coverage amounts to between $3 million and $5 million and is a safeguard in case of a career-threatening injury.
"The premium is astronomical (but) the payback in the event of a catastrophe puts the monetary value there,"
McCoy's father, Brad, told the Web site Sunday. "We felt it was the prudent thing to do."
"The odds of a kid getting a career-ending injury are slim,"
said insurance specialist Kent Bradford, the father of Oklahoma junior quarterback Sam Bradford. "But if it did happen, and you had the chance to insure, chances are you would feel pretty dumb."
McCoy, a 6-foot-2 native of Tuscola, Texas, passed for 3,859 yards and 34 touchdowns last season with just eight interceptions in 433 attempts.
