Final: Texas defeats Iowa State 56-3
AMES, Iowa — The Longhorns snapped a four-game Big 12 losing streak in a big way — a 56-3 victory over Iowa State on Saturday.
Facing a friend on the opposing sideline — former Texas defensive coordinator Gene Chizik is now Iowa State’s head coach — the 23rd-ranked Longhorns showed little compassion.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy threw four touchdown passes and ran for another. Colt McCoy completed 23 of his 30 passes for 298 yards. For just the second time this season, he did not have an interception.
But the Longhorn defense did intercept Iowa State twice. The first one, by Brandon Foster, resulted in a Texas touchdown. The second one, by Deon Beasley, led to another score.
In all, seven Longhorns scored touchdowns, with receiver Jordan Shipley reaching the end zone twice.
Texas improved to 5-2 on the year and 1-2 in Big 12 play. Iowa State, in Chizik’s first year as head coach, fell to 1-6.
Fourth quarter highlights:
With backup quarterback John Chiles leading a freshman-heavy Texas offense, the Longhorns extended their lead to 56-3. Chiles scored his first career touchdown on an 11-yard run. He had set up the touchdown with a 23-yard run.
After that, the Longhorns tried hard not to score and run it up on Chizik’s new team, even taking a delay of game penalty to chew up the clock.
