Sooners Get Back On Track With 28-21 Win Over Longhorns
Dallas, Texas (AHN) - Even though Saturday's Texas-Oklahoma game lost some of its luster as both teams lost last week, the contest was still as entertaining and full of drama as it would have been if both teams came into the game undefeated.
Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford completed 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns but his most important completion was a 35-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Kelly in the fourth quarter which broke a tie ball game and gave the No. 10 Sooners a 28-21 victory over No. 19 Texas.
While the game did not seem extremely important in regard to the national championship picture, the contest between the two rivals will have a big bearing on the eventual Big 12 conference winner.
Oklahoma (5-1, 1-1) managed to keep itself in the conference title picture with its win while Texas (4-2, 0-2) had its title hopes severely dashed. With the defeat, the Longhorns have lost their first two conference games for the first time since 1956.
Texas did have a valiant effort from its banged up quarterback Colt McCoy though. The freshman looked like he just can out of an infirmary as his throwing arm was bandaged for the game because of his getting roughed up in last week's loss.
Colt McCoy played fine despite that though as he kept his team in the game completing 19-of-26 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns. His two passing scores actually gave Texas a 14-7 lead halfway through the second quarter.
Oklahoma ended up scoring three of the next four touchdowns in the game though.
The most important came at 10:42 in the final quarter when Bradford looked more like a senior who started all four years for his club instead of the freshman that he is as he led his team on a 12-play, 94 yard drive.
The final play on that drive was the game-winning score as Kelly pulled in Bradford's pass to give Oklahoma the 28-21 win.
Texas did have a couple of opportunities to tie the game but it never could get close to the end zone. Colt McCoy's lone mistake on the day came in the final quarter when he was intercepted by Reggie Smith on the series right after the Sooners scored.
